This RADER FAMILY OUTLINEPeter RADER was born in America on 15 Jun 1787 and died 7 Mar 1828. His father was Peter RADER and was born in Zwaibrichen, Germany, of Swiss parents who had migrated to Germany. His mother was Elizabeth of who nothing more is known. This Peter m. Catherine (FRIED) RADER and the family will be documented later in this issue. I am a little confused with the background noted and will try to put in a little work on this line and make sure that there has not been an error in mixing up the Peters in these generations. OUR ALLIED FAMILIES "THE TUCKWILLERs of Greenbrier West Virginia"The Greater Greenbrier County Fair, held annually is West Virginia's largest and acknowledged equal of any state fair. It is held each year during the week previous to Labor day. R. H. TUCKWILLER is viceªpresident (ca 1895) C. E. BOONE is treasurer, and W. L. TABSCOTT is secretary, Directors include J. B. SYDENSTRICKER, R.H. TUCKWILLER, S. P. PREWTON, H. B. MOORE, C. E. BOONE, Dr. J. W. COMPTON, Ed. L. BLAKE, C. G. RADER (thot to be Conrad?), and H. B. WILSON. In 1869 the Ludington steer was exhibited. The steer weighed 4000 pounds and was the largest in the world. It was raised by Mr. JARRETT, in Blue Sulphur District. It was sold to Samuel LUDINGTON, who disposed of it to Mr. PEYTON manager of "The Old White." It was said that "the steer was so broad across the back that a half-bushel of shelled corn could be poured on it and not a kernel would roll off." In 1769 a settlement was made in the Williamsburg region, there were some even earlier in existance on Anthony Creek. Captain Matthew ARBUCKLE, Captian Samuel McCLUNG, Colonel Andrew DONNALLY, builder of Fort DONNALLY in RADER's Valley, successfully withstood a determined Indian attack and seige in 1778. The Old Stone Church yard is filled with the graves of those who worshipped here. When Dr. McELHENNY became pastor, there were only eleven graves in the cemetery. The earliest sstone bears the date 1797, the year following the erection of the church, and marks the grave of Elizabeth (RADER) HOLIMAN, sister of Captain Abraham RADER. Note: In your research thru the census and land records it sometimes appears that your ancestors moved, when in reality the new counties were formed around them. There were some bad political feelings when parts of counties pulled away and many times the old records were hidden and not allowed to make up the basis of the new county's files, (this comes from a personal 8 day search in Potosi MO) so be sure to search the parent counties' records too. I hope the above will help some of you in your quests. RESEARCH HINTS cont.....3} Land records can be invaluable. I found, after a 5 year search, my grandmother's WILL recorded in the land records. Also they oftentimes will reveal the previous residence of the purchaser, or the destination of the seller. Since time usually elapses between the selling and the final deed, the residence of the Notary can give you a clue. READ ALL THE FINE PRINT in and about the deeds. 4} Most important of all - record the dates and places, not just names. If no dates or places are readily available, try to make a guesstimate of the general date and whether it was in the south - east - river country etc. You will never regret it. Make a note of the record from which the information was taken. It only takes a minute to run a copy of the leader page of the book. Use the back of this copy for your notes. Your will find it invaluable later after you have gotten home from a hurried visit to the Archives, Library, or especially to Salt Lake. You may want to have another look at that book or reference when you turn up another name, generation or marriage. Remember the Dewey system number on the spine of a book is unique to only 'that' library, a different library will have a different Dewey number for the same book. (sadly I found this out the hard way) Work with your local library, they can get almost any book you need {with a little time} thru the interlibrary loan system..its great!!!! 5} And PLEASE when recording dates in your records, use the standard GENEALOGICAL METHOD. 10{day}Nov{month in three letter abbreviation} 1789 {use all four numbers of the year} So all your dates will look like this 10 Nov 1789. There is never an error in transcribing by anyone. i.e. 10/11/89 In a family sheet I received recently none of the days of birth were over 12. I still am not sure which is the day and which is the month and which century they were born in. Applying the STANDARD method will help others, tommorrow, next year, or many years from now, interpret your legacy. It's an easy habit to get into and you will never regret it. QUERIES and SUCH29. I wonder if anyone can document the marriage of Johann Adam Ro(e)der to Catherine Tauber/Diebert? I am in the process of reading the microfilms of the Church register of Mutterstadt, and Ittlingen (for BENDER) and have on order Maudach (apparently from where the Ro(e)ders came to Mutterstadt). Ans. to 302.150 Janet KADEMAN 30. On the wills you printed on pp. 23-24 (of Vol 1) you didn't indicate where these wills are filed. Can you give us this information? Note: Janet KADEMAN sent them in and noted Greene Co. TN. Sorry I missed that. She also sent photocopies of portraits in a later letter of Henry, Jake and Christie RADER. (You Colorado searchers take note.) 31. Is there documentation on the wife of Matthias (III-2-b) as Jessie PAINTER/BENDER? The booklet on "BENDER Ancestors" (a compilation of BENDER/PAINTER references) has no reference to a Jesse or Jessie PAINTER/BENDER. I will welcome any info. on this. Ans. to 302.150. 32. A lawsuit filed 21 Nov 1812 in Highland Co. Ohio shows "Witnesses in the case; John BORDEN, Betsy RADER, Jacob SAUM, Jacob SURBER, David BORDEN, and Jacob NICELY, also shown are Jacob BORDEN and Abraham BORDEN." Does anyone have a connection to Betsy? Ans. to editor. 33. Correspondence from Robert A. Van DYNE of Salina KA...He sent his RADER information to someone who was supposed to copy it and send it back..He has never received it and can't locate the name and address of the party he sent it to....anyone out there guilty??..He would like to get back to RADER research without starting at the beginning. The Pioneer who first settled in this spot named it Buck's Garden because it was a paradise for deer, with a creek running the full length of the meadows and mountains for their roaming. From the time you leave the State Highway until you reach the end of the Garden it is unexcelled for granduer. Ben LeMASTERS and family settled there in 1792. He came from Scotland. Patented something over 1800 and 2000 acres. He reared 10 daughters and died at the age of 86 years. Joe (prob. Joseph) RADER m Rebecca Le MASTER 1872John RADER m. Elvira Le MASTER. In Pennsylvania the name was spelled several ways. Viz. ROEDER, RAIDER, ROIDER, READER, REITER, REDER. In Virginia spelled READER, RIDER, ROEDER, after 1800 it has been spelled RADER *********** England did not allow emigrants to use more than one name, so father took one name and son the other. Ex. Adam Matthias ROEDER became: father, Adam ROEDER. son, Matthias ROEDER TAZEWELL CO., VIRGINIA MARRIAGES S.W.V. 1800-1852p 72 RADER, Mary to Thomas GILLISPIE 24 Dec 1833 D. Note: Well the new computer is on line and I will be working hard the next two months to get all the material, that you have sent, fed into the data base. I am also going to put it all into the regulation Genealogical form with the LDS program so will have Ancesor Charts and family sheets to send out. As close as I can figure there are probably 100,000 RADERs and their families to sort out so my work is before me... I also have 3 books that I am working on and hope to get some work done on them too....someday...... Volume II of our RADER RELATIVES will begin in July HAPPY HUNTING...and send in names and addresses of those you would like to receive information on our Newsletter...
